This is one month after the famous board meeting where Apple's board of directors sided with Sculley and removed Steve Jobs from his managerial duties as head of the Macintosh division. Desenvolvido por Tim Paterson, o 86-DOS em grande parte foi uma duplicação do sistema operacional CPM de Gary Kildall. A Microsoft comprou todos os direitos do 86-DOS de Paterson nos EUA  por cerca de 50 mil dólares pouco antes do lançamento do IBM PC, resultando no Microsoft MS-DOS, que foi o sistema operacional que podia rodar em qualquer computador da família 8086.
